More Than a Meal: The Joy of Eating Together

Think about some of your favourite moments…chances are, a few of these have happened around a table with your favourite people by your side.

There's something special about sharing a meal. And as it turns out, it's not just a feeling. Research suggests that eating together has meaningful benefits on our happiness, mental wellbeing and sense of connection.

Good food and good company have a meaningful impact on our wellbeing.

We spend a lot of time thinking about what we eat. Protein, fibre, vegetables, nutrients…What if we thought more about how we eat, and who we eat with?

A University of Oxford study found that people who regularly eat with others report greater happiness, higher life satisfaction and stronger connections to their communities.

The research also linked shared meals with having more friends to turn to for support.

It seems that sitting down together offers something we can't find in an ingredient list: a sense of belonging.

Connection is a form of nourishment, too.

In a world of busy schedules, endless notifications and meals squeezed between meetings, meaningful connection can sometimes feel like another thing on the to-do list…yet our relationships are fundamental to our wellbeing.

The US Surgeon General's 2023 advisory on social connection identified strong social relationships as an important contributor to both mental and physical health.

And while connection can happen anywhere, sharing a meal creates a natural opportunity to slow down, talk, listen and simply enjoy being together.

Small moments can have meaningful benefits.

It's not just adults who benefit from time around the table, a 2023 review of research found that more frequent family meals were associated with better dietary habits and positive mental health and wellbeing outcomes among children and adolescents.

All of this reinforces something beautifully simple: making time for each other matters, and sometimes, the most meaningful conversations happen between mouthfuls.

Here at IKU, we exist to nourish, to us, that means more than macros, it’s also about giving you more time together, less time preparing.

Because sharing a meal doesn't have to mean spending hours in the kitchen.

Sometimes it's a curry in the middle of the table, a few favourite sides and everyone helping themselves.

And that’s why we created IKU To Share, so you can have more of these moments, while adding more nourishment to everyday life.

Simply warm, add your favourite sides and bring everyone to the table.

Because when it comes to feeling good, what we share can be just as important as what we eat.

Good food nourishes us. Sharing it brings us together.
